In 1963, the US began using five-digit ZIP codes nationally. Zone improvement plan, or ZIP, codes make it possible to sort and distribute mail more precisely and effectively. ZIP codes are normally assigned by the USPS to cities and municipalities based on factors such as population density and geographic location. However, certain ZIP codes are exclusive to a particular structure, organization, business, or branch of the government. New York, New York's Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is one of several buildings in Manhattan’s Midtown or Financial District that have been given a special ZIP code due to the volume of mail they receive. With its 102 storeys, the massive Art Deco skyscraper was a pioneering feat when it was completed in 1931, and people rushed to climb what was then the highest structure in the world.
The more than 2.8 million rentable square feet of its commercial floors are now occupied by a wide range of businesses. Everybody gets a ton of mail. Another sector of the economy with firms big enough to need their own ZIP code is retail. The headquarters of the massive retail chain Walmart are located in Bentonville, Arkansas, and the city is home to a museum honoring the company’s past. Sam Walton, the company’s founder, set up shop in Rogers, a few miles outside of Bentonville, in 1962. By the end of the decade, the firm had opened 18 Walmart shops and 17 Ben Franklin stores under its brand. It had grown quickly.
